Brandyn flung himself into Christianâs arms. He and Storm had watched, open-mouthed, as Aylen took down the men and drove them off. They ran to greet them halfway down the cragâs path.
âI donât understand. Why are you here?â Brandyn asked, as he led them back up the path.
âI sensed you,â Christian said. âSensed you needed help.â
âWe needed help all right,â Storm said.
âIs it true? Did you kill those men?â Aylen asked.
Storm, walking ahead, raised both hands in the air. âIt was either take their lives or watch them take Hollynâs. What they intended to do to her would have killed her.â
Aylen nodded. âThen you did right.â
âI know I did,â Storm said. âBrandyn is the one who needs to come round to it.â
When they reached the top, Christian moved quickly to gather the childrenâs belongings into their satchels, securing them to the mules. Aylen knelt over Hollyn, working her magic. She was far sicker now than she had been when Brandyn first told the young couple about her, in what seemed a lifetime ago. Christian sniffed the air, and Brandyn wondered if he was smelling death.
Aylen turned her head back. âBrandyn, do you know anything at all about what ails your sister?â
âNo, Magi Aylen.â
âYou still donât know? After all this time?â
He shook his head. âNo one knows. No one has ever seen it before. Weâve had many come, from all over the Westerlands, trying to work magic or potions, or even prayer. Nothing changes.â
Aylen exchanged a look with Christian. Even Brandyn could read it. I can ease her, but I canât fix her.
And if Aylen could notâ¦
Christian lifted the unconscious form of Hollyn and draped her over Sunâs back. Brandyn stepped forward with a blanket and covered her.
âFor the morning,â he said. âSunlight canât touch her.â
Christian nodded. âHollyn will ride with me. Brandyn, you ride on Moon, with Aylen.â
âAnd Storm?â
âStorm,â Christian said, with a soft smile at the young rogue, âwill follow with the mules. I suspect she will be two days behind us, at the pace they can take. Hollyn needs better than we can give her out here, and we must make haste. Besides, we know Storm can defend herself.â
Storm grinned.
Brandyn approached Storm. âWill you be okay without us?â
ââCourse.â
âYouâll come? You wonât turn around and go home?â
She shook her head. âIâll be right behind you, Brandyn.â
Brandyn launched forward and pulled her into an awkward embrace. âTry not to kill anyone else.â
âI will try my very best,â Storm promised, landing a kiss on his forehead. âBut I make no promises.â
He reached into his back pocket and withdrew the dagger heâd retrieved in the tavern. The other had been lost in the chaos, but one would be all she needed if trouble found her again. âIn case you need it again.â
She accepted it with a subtle smile, nodding as she slipped it back into her boot.
Brandyn leaned back into Aylen as they disappeared into the night. He didnât turn to make sure Storm followed. He trusted her.
